Coronavirus will not delay Cyberpunk 2077. CD Projekt RED keeps the release date

CD Projekt RED is not planning to delay the release of Cyberpunk 2077 due to coronavirus. The problem is that although this may affect sales results, developers don't have much choice. The premiere date of the new generation of consoles is pushing them to the wall.

Polish programmers from CD Projekt RED have postponed the premiere of their new game once. Cyberpunk 2077 was originally to appear on store shelves and in digital stores in a week, April 16. However, the company gave itself a little more time to refine the production and delayed its debut by as much as five months.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, fans were afraid that Cyberpunk 2077 would hit another slip. However, the studio's representatives argue that players should not change their plans for fall. Although currently CD Projekt RED has completely switched to remote operation mode, there is no question of changing the release date.

Cyberpunk 2077 is expected to hit current generation consoles and PCs as planned, i.e. September 17, 2020.

However, this raises some concerns, because all employees of the Polish company now work remotely, and because of this, they can be less effective. It is not excluded that maintaining the current release date will affect the quality of the code, and the game due to coronavirus will suffer and part of the content will be cut during production.

There is nothing to despair now. Although CD Projekt did not manage to play in April, it is possible that it was only postponed until September to skip the holiday. If this happened, it could provide the company with an adequate time buffer to allow it to survive the pandemic.

Let's not forget, however, that CD Projekt RED can now be leaned against the wall.

If it turns out that developers run out of time, then the company is unfortunately in a spot. Delaying the release of the game would be a problem due to the planned date of launching new generation consoles. Microsoft and Sony are still aiming for the launch of the Xbox X Series and PlayStation 5 respectively at the end of 2020.

In some respects Poles are basically clung to the wall. Work on Cyberpunk 2077 lasted many years, and the game debuts at the very end of the life cycle of the current generation of consoles. CD Projekt certainly wants to be on time with Cyberpunk 2077 before new gaming devices are on sale.

In addition, keeping the release date may paradoxically affect Cyberpunk 2077 sales results in a negative way.

We don't know how long humanity will be struggling with the coronavirus and how many players will have video games in their minds in September if they can't work normally by then. It is not excluded that lockdown in a more or less restrictive form will last for several months.

There is also no certainty that in September everyone will be able to run to the supermarket to buy their game box. Of course, digital distribution is a salvation for developers, but this is only part of the video game market pie. Physical media is still an important sales channel.

Many people will never decide to buy a game without a box at full price, and the reason is prosaic.

A digital copy of the game is permanently assigned to the user's account, which means that it cannot be later borrowed to friends or resold to withdraw at least part of the funds. Cyberpunk 2077 debuts in addition without a multiplayer mode, which could be an incentive not to sell the game after passing.

If the coronavirus continues to rage in a few months, delaying the release of Cyberpunk 2077 could be a way to reduce losses. This is the path taken recently by the Naughty Dog studio, which stopped the premiere of The Last of Us 2 not to polish its title, but because of distribution problems.

CD Projekt RED is unlikely to be able to afford it.

I think players would not be too bad for developers to postpone the release if it would be due to a pandemic, but there are always a number of factors to consider. In this case, it is a stock exchange - a decrease in the value of shares could be more severe than lower sales revenues.

Above all, however, the company is blocked by the aforementioned consoles release date. Increasingly, however, I wonder if representatives of Microsoft and Sony, who emphasize that they are still planning the premiere of their products for this year, are not just making a good face for a bad game.

And what if each of these companies waits for the first competitor to withdraw from the race?

I know this is a divination from coffee grounds, but many manufacturers are now postponing product launches. This year, for the first time in a decade, we may not even see the new iPhone. In the case of Microsoft, you can also see a lot of changes, but while the two-screen Surface Neo goes to the drawer, the console is already debuting as planned.

Sony is a huge corporation and, on the one hand, its movie department now postpones all cinema premieres for about a year, while the video games department claims that everything stays the same. In this context, I won't be surprised if it turns out that the presentation of the Dual Sense controller was just a smokescreen.

It's also possible that game developers are waiting with the announcement of a delay in the release dates announced for the fall only until Microsoft and Sony postpone the debut of the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 to 2021. Still, I want to believe that this will not happen, and both next generation consoles and Cyberpunk 2077 will actually debut without delay.
