The Apple Swift programming language will soon be compatible with Windows

An investment in learning programming in Swift is becoming more and more profitable. Already today you can write apps for macOS, iOS and its variants, as well as for some Linux distributions. Coming soon for Windows.

Apple Swift is a language designed for those who are just starting their adventure with programming and are looking for something easier - but also suitable for writing useful applications. Swift is characterized by high-level structures built into the language and many simplifications.

It is a high-performance compiled language with a LLVM (Low Level Virtual Machine) compiler - thanks to which it contains the Automatic Reference Counting object manager known from Objective C. It offers a lot of modern and high-level structures and language features such as generic types or protocols (equivalent to interfaces in other languages). Iteration over the values in the data collection is also facilitated.

It also provides programming support functions: Assert, which can be useful for creating unit tests, a structure called closure, which is equivalent to the lambda function in other languages, or the so-called optional chaining to securely reach nested fields in objects. It is also flexible when it comes to types: for example, a method can return many types of values simultaneously or have optional parameters. Its structure also supports the functional programming paradigm.

And now Apple Swift is heading for Windows. Well, at least in part.

Along with the Swift upgrade to version 5.3, support for additional Linux and Windows distributions will be added. The latter will have to be in Windows 10 1809 or later for the application to work. Unfortunately, there is a limitation that people who know Swift quite well can already guess.

Only the logical layer of the application written in Swift will be able to be implemented unattended in the Windows version. SwiftUI interface controls are closely related to Apple operating system controls, so they are not compatible with Windows.

Without a doubt, however, this will be a significant facilitation for programmers who will be able to reuse a significant part of the code. And this in turn should increase interest in Swift itself, which has long been a very interesting alternative to the default Apple's Objective-C.
