#HomeOffice: Koronavirus closed offices. How to organize work at home - a guide

A coronavirus pandemic is a necessity for many to quit work. However, some of us have the opportunity to continue our duties by working from home. Contrary to appearances, this solution not only has advantages, but it can also be a trap for our time and productivity.

The following tips are based on personal experience in remote work, as well as the need to train and advise others on how to organize work in a home office. They may not be suitable for all types of work, but they fit most "computer" jobs - that is, normal office work.

Dress like to work

Treat the transition from bed to desk as going to work. Dress up, do not sit in pajamas or a bathrobe. This is of great mental significance - our brain learns rituals and will not be able to sit "home" as a necessity to switch to work mode. You will also feel better and the clothes will help if you need to have a conference call.

Keep in touch with colleagues

You may work alone as a freelancer, but if your job is to collaborate in a larger team, remember to keep in touch. This is not just about work-related contacts.

Show up in the office from time to time, keep regular conference calls with the team, remember to write to them, for example, wishes on the communicator or congratulations on the birth of a child. Use video calls - studies have shown that most of the information is transmitted non-verbally. You can use, for example, FaceTime, Skype, Hangouts, Slack or Teams.

Personnel contacts play an important role at work and help in building relationships.

Set working hours and stick to them

Workers from home tend to unwittingly extend the hours they spend working. If we did not work from home, we would have left the office a long time ago - and in the case of home office we have nowhere to leave! We have to set a limit - after a few hours of work, productivity drops so much that we will do the same much faster rest the next day.

Let the break be a break

Are you taking a coffee or dinner break? Go to the kitchen or restaurant - do not eat sandwiches in a hurry at the desk where you work. After such a meal, you will not be full, rested or satisfied with the results of your work.

Take care of transparency

Perhaps your boss or client will have a hard time appreciating your work if he can't see its progress. Ensure proper visibility of your tasks and their status. Good for this is some online tool that others will have access to. I can recommend Trello for this - it is a board with tasks that we can easily configure and share. If you're writing code (programming), take care of frequent commits to the code repository.

E-mails are much less effective here - it is difficult to get any response and information whether anyone has read our e-mail at all. Nevertheless, the end-of-day report will be useful in case of any misunderstandings.

Prepare a working environment without disturbance

We associate the house with leisure, family life and entertainment. We arrange it to reflect these views. That is why it is important to prepare a work place where we will be away from distractions. Let's not sit with a laptop on your lap in front of the television turned on!

Keep your finger on the pulse

If working from home is something new in your company, it's possible that there are no strategies and rules for remote collaboration yet. Don't let important information miss you - set up rules for exchanging messages, create a shared Wiki or Slack channel and let everyone know that the information you provide will be binding.
