The Uncensored Library is a great skeleton for censorship of authoritarian, totalitarian and such fearful of freedom of speech. With the help of the Minecraft virtual library, millions of players gained access to banned publications. These often belong to journalists who paid their articles with their own lives.
The Uncensored Library is the idea and initiative of Reporters Without Borders (RSF). Members of this international NGO have decided to use Minecraft as a lockpick where freedom of speech is at risk. Minecraft is available in many countries that use media censorship or banned books and publications.
The Uncensored Library is a great, beautiful library available in Mineraft.
BlockWorks - a studio professionally involved in creating paid content for Minecraft is responsible for the design and implementation of the virtual space. The grand library building consists of seven basic parts: the main square with a beautiful dome, rooms for five countries using censorship to fight free media and freedom of speech, as well as a room dedicated to Reporters without borders.
Russia, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, Mexico and Egypt were on the infamous list of censorship media. Why these countries, if there are many more countries not respecting freedom of speech? Because Minecraft is widely available there for anyone interested, constituting a hole in the propaganda wall of controlled media. It's enough for players from Russia to turn on Minecraft and enter the server of The Uncensored Library. There are publications waiting for them that they will never see in newspapers.
The Uncensored Library is a free project. Everyone can visit the library.
All you need is Minecraft in Java (1.14.4) for Windows 10 or MacOS. We open the multiplayer tab in the game, and then paste visit.uncensoredlibrary.com as the server's IP address to which we want to join. An alternative method is to download a data packet with a library, and then manually unpack and paste it into the game files. The second method does not require us to connect to the Internet.
Visiting The Uncensored Library we come across, among others on articles by Jamal Khashoggi - a Washington Post journalist - who was murdered and dismembered at the Saudi Arabian consulate for criticizing the actions of Prince Mohammed bin Salman. There are also publications by Javier Valdez - the founder of his own newspaper to expose corruption in Mexico - who was shot dead for his brave activities.
Over 250 journalists are currently behind bars.
They are victims of censorship, corruption, regime and fear of freedom of speech. From now on, citizens of five countries where authorities are trying to destroy real investigative journalism can find out the truth. For publications so inconvenient for the authorities that some gave their lives for them. Minecraft has become a treasury of this type of material, providing access to them also from censored countries. At least for now.
Great idea. Great performance. Hats off, dear Reporters without borders.
PS According to the press freedom index, Poland has dropped from an honorable 18th place to 59th place. We are in a club with countries such as Georgia, Argentina, Armenia and Mongolia. Norway, Sweden and Finland top the list, while China, Eritrea, Turkmenistan and North Korea scrub at the bottom.
Hats off to an idea. Reporters without borders provide prohibited publications using ... Minecraft
