Coronavirus will accelerate the appearance of e-receipts. At least in theory

The coronavirus pandemic forces us to take extraordinary precautions, especially when dealing with other people and objects. As part of the spec of the law related to COVID-19 disease, politicians have been trying to introduce the option of issuing e-receipts from April. At least that's the theory.

The spec currently being developed assumes that e-receipts, i.e. receipts sent electronically to an e-mail address, will be able to be issued only by those sellers who use online cash registers.

The relationship with the spec act on COVID-19 is obvious here. The seller will not have to touch the paper receipt and pass it on to the consumer, which in the current situation will reduce the risk of horizontal coronavirus infection. At least, officials of the Ministry of Finance say in response to the question of Dziennik Gazeta Prawna .

Although introduced as part of the spec act on the ongoing pandemic, ultimately this change is to remain with us permanently. Initially, its introduction was included in the amendment to tax laws that are to come into force on July 1, 2020, however, in the face of the ongoing epidemic, it was decided to use this particular provision to limit contact at service outlets.

So when will we receive the first e-receipt?

Well ... not soon. Electronic receipts can be issued via online cash registers, both hardware and software (available in the form of software for tablets, mobile phones or other mobile devices).

However, so far online cash registers are not adapted to issue e-receipts. Manufacturers have yet to create the appropriate functionality and obtain approval. Only then will e-receipts actually appear on the market. When can this happen? There is no answer to this question. The introduced regulations only allow the issuing of e-receipts, but it is the market that will decide when implementing the regulations will be most profitable for it.

Wait, cash in the form of software ..?

As such, program cash registers do not yet exist. The first regulations describing virtual cash registers have just been submitted to the European Commission and the period of its notification should end by 30 April. Experts estimate that the first purely program cash registers will not appear on the market until the second half of the year.
