Coronavirus in Poland. The number of infected is increasing. Authorities call for calmness

Health Minister Łukasz Szumowski today announced another three confirmed cases of coronavirus. These are not the only new cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection reported by Polish authorities that are doing their best to limit the spread of the virus in our country.

In addition to news from the Ministry of Health, we also have a message from the Ministry of National Defense, which said that the general commander of the armed forces, General Jaroslaw Miki, has infected the coronavirus.

The infection took place in Germany, where the general participated in the meeting of commanders of NATO ground troops (it was about Defender Europe-20 exercises). The Ministry of National Defense informs that Miki is feeling well, the people who accompanied him were quarantined and everything took place in accordance with applicable procedures.

A few hours after the conference of the Minister of Health, at which the public was informed about 18 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Poland, it turned out that another two were detected. The number of patients is growing so fast that at the time of publication, data from the so-called last minute are out of date (there were 22 identified patients in Poland at the time of publication).

This is also the biggest problem when it comes to the SARS-CoV-2 characteristics

It is highly contagious, and infected people do not show any symptoms for the first week of virus incubation .

That is why, despite the efforts of the Chinese authorities, he managed to cross the Chinese border and spread throughout the world. When it comes to Europe, Italy is in the lead in terms of the number of people infected with coronavirus. New cases of coronavirus reported by the Minister of Health today have just come back from there. The Chief Sanitary Inspectorate advises against trips to those regions.

Sanitary controls on the border with Germany and the Czech Republic, canceled events and quarantine

Polish authorities are doing their best to minimize the number of coronavirus infections. That is why in five places on the western border of our country sanitary controls were introduced, which check buses and passenger buses returning from the territory of the Czech Republic and Germany.

The scope of control is to be expanded with time, but now the view of sanitary services dressed in tight protective suits looks serious. Checks are currently taking place at the following border crossings: Kołbaskowo, Świecko, Olszyna, Jędrzychowice and Gorzyczki. Over 250 buses and 90 buses have already been inspected.

The Ministry of Health also announced a top-down decision to cancel mass events. Government officials add that it is not yet necessary to cancel theater performances or cinema screenings, but they add that such decisions can be taken by local authorities if they consider it necessary.

This is what happened in Poznań , where the local authorities issued a decision to close municipal educational institutions.

- Today we will send a message to all heads of schools, kindergartens and nurseries that they will close the institutions from tomorrow - said Jędrzej Solarski, deputy mayor of Poznań.

Poznań authorities emphasize that closing school is a decision that is by no means dictated by panic. This is about prevention, which is currently the most sensible weapon in the fight against SARS-CoV-2

- Once again I repeat: we absolutely do not panic, but we want to (act) preventively - prevention is the cheapest and the easiest. Unfortunately, the Italian example shows that infections very often passed through children who at school got infected from their peers, went through coronavirus completely asymptomatic, while they transmitted this disease, this virus to the elderly, especially seniors - says Solarski.

Other cities have not decided to take such precautions. However, looking at the pace of development of events related to coronavirus, I will not be surprised if this state of affairs changes this week.

Representatives of the Ministry of Health also assured that our hospitals are prepared for the hospitalization of people with coronavirus. It is mainly about the number of places in infectious wards and access to respirators, which are crucial in providing assistance to people with respiratory failure, which may occur (as a complication) in people with COVID-19.

Anyway, it's include the lack of this apparatus and limitation to highly emergency treatment (hospitalization + saline) resulted in such a high number of deaths in China.

Compared to other countries, the situation in Poland is not so bad

Due to the fact that the coronavirus appeared with a slight delay compared to Western European countries, the Polish authorities have an easier task. They can observe the development of the situation in our western neighbors and react in advance to scenarios that have already begun abroad.

This gives us a slight advantage, although the number of people infected with coronavirus by the end of March will certainly increase at least several times. However, I remind you that the COVID-19 mortality rate is not terribly high and you should not panic too much.
