Microsoft's co-founder and his former president breaks almost all formal ties with his company. Bill Gates will remain the advisor to the current president, Satya Nadelli. However, he wants to devote himself entirely to the work of his foundation.
Microsoft announced last night that Bill Gates is no longer part of his board. The multimillionaire who founded the company together with Paul Allen justifies his decision by wanting to focus on charity. Gates was also a board member of the Berkshire Hathaway holding and also resigned.
The former president of Microsoft, however, does not break all formal relationships with his company. He is still a technology advisor for Satya Nadelli, the current president of the Redmond giant. The Microsoft Board consists of 12 people from today. The official announcement did not indicate whether it is planned to expand its composition.
Bill Gates lost his heart to Microsoft a long time ago.
He resigned as president, which he had planned for a long time. Gates's attitude towards Microsoft, which confirms both the interested party and those around him, has changed the famous antitrust process regarding the illegal use of Windows's dominant position on the market to destroy Internet Explorer's competition. The billionaire apparently ceased to like his position when he learned his less pleasant sides from the band of continuous success.
Bill Gates is today created by some as a technological visionary. His great programming skills undoubtedly helped him to properly manage Microsoft and make technologically right decisions, but the source of his success was more in cunning and extraordinary business dexterity.
If someone told us to point out one specific moment in Microsoft's history that decided about its spectacular success that continues to this day, it would not be the premiere of a groundbreaking product.
Because without any doubt one should indicate Bill Gates's cunning when negotiating a contract with IBM. Not only the negotiations themselves are a very interesting story to follow - I will also recommend our broader material about Bill Gates - this result has almost led to Microsoft's monopoly on the consumer and corporate operating software market.
The home and office IBM PC with the Microsoft MS-DOS operating system was supposed to be very affordable, and therefore built of widely available components. And Gates made sure that MS-DOS was not an exclusive product for IBM. IBM PC was actually very client-oriented . Its architecture was so open that its reconstruction after independent shopping in an electronics store was not an overly difficult task.
Like mushrooms after the rain, so-called IBM PC clones began to appear. Computers as cheap and useful as the original and ... without an operating system. MS-DOS was necessarily compatible with these clones, and basically every new IBM PC sold or its clone meant another piece of MS-DOS sold.
Holding the position of president, he was also not a good ghost of the company . Microsoft employees described him as a withdrawn introvert who did not accept failures. He wasn't a despot like Apple boss Steve Jobs. However, he was able to remain silent throughout the entire meeting with his managers, only to conclude their efforts and work for weeks at the end as a complete moron . Although he was not immune to arguments and did not consider himself infallible - if a given manager or programmer after being ridden from top to bottom could defend himself with counterarguments, Gates listened. And he was convincing.
Bill Gates found himself in philanthropy. Together with his wife they are effectively changing the world for the better.
The Foundation runs four major programs: Global Development Program, Global Health Program, US Program and Global Policy & Advocacy Division. It is the second largest organization of this type of American origin, which has already managed to provide assistance to various initiatives in the value estimated at over USD 30 billion. In particular, it is interested in the development of GMOs in agriculture, such as golden rice, which is a remedy for vitamin A deficiencies among the population of third world countries. It also allocates a lot of resources to the development of sanitary facilities, trying to combat the problem of access to clean water in developing countries. The foundation also supports many other initiatives, including UNICEF.
Gates also willingly spends money on charities that are unrelated to the activities of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. His funding for various educational facilities - from high schools to colleges - is estimated at hundreds of millions of dollars. He also invests privately in startups fighting Alzheimer's disease.
The Gates Foundation has already donated $ 100 million to fight coronavirus , and more specifically to create a vaccine against the virus. $ 20 million of this amount will go to American organizations. Another 20 million to countries in South Asia and Africa, where the foundation believes the disease will spread faster due to poorer access to personal hygiene and running water. The remainder of the quota will go to China and the other countries affected by the epidemic.
