Visa will raise the limit on contactless payments without PIN to PLN 100

In July, Visa will raise the limit on contactless payments without a PIN. The limit will no longer be PLN 50, but PLN 100. Mastercard is also working on a similar solution.

On July 17 this year, Visa will introduce new regulations , thanks to which the users of this organization's cards will be able to provide PIN less frequently in contactless payments in the store. Currently, the PIN must be entered for transactions above PLN 50, and according to new regulations, the amount of the transaction without the PIN will be raised to PLN 100.

The introduction of such a novelty is not as simple a task as it may seem. For the new Visa regulations to work in practice, they must also be implemented on the side of banks and payment terminal operators.

However, we will wait for this until at least the fourth quarter of 2020, because financial institutions want to implement raising the limit for Visa and Mastercard simultaneously. Both organizations have obtained the consent of the National Bank of Poland, while Mastercard has not yet announced when it will implement the novelty on its side. However, it is to be 2020.

The transaction limit up to PLN 50 without PIN was established a decade ago. A lot has changed since then.

Ten years ago, contactless payments were just crawling, and today they are the basis for paying in Poland. Each (!) Payment terminal in our country already has the function of contactless payments. Perhaps 10 years ago the limit of PLN 50 was reasonable, but today it is not enough. Even small purchases in the grocery store quickly outweigh the amount of PLN 50.

In addition, three years ago the average value of contactless transactions in Poland exceeded PLN 50 , which means that it was three times higher than in 2010. In addition, the real purchasing value of the zloty decreased by a total of 21.6 percent over 10 years.

At EU level, a regulation is in force on a maximum single transaction without a PIN code of up to 50 euros. Even the limit of PLN 100 is much lower than the level set by the Union.

What about payments with smartphones and watches? The answer varies depending on the system.

Apple Pay in Poland - list of banks, how to pay, which iPhone?

Apple Pay and Garmin Pay users can and will be able to make contactless transactions for any amount without entering a PIN. This requires prior verification of the user on the device he pays for. When paying with an iPhone, the user is verified biometrically via Face ID. On the other hand, you need to enter your PIN once a day on your Garmin watch, or more often if you took your watch off your hand.

What about Google Pay? PIN is still necessary, but Google is working on implementing a system similar to Apple Pay in Poland.
