NASA delays the first flight of the SLS rocket. The start of the Artemis 1 mission is planned for next year

If you follow the preparations for the Artemis program with baked face, I don't have good news for you. Once again, the test - still unmanned - launch of the SLS rocket, which is supposed to take people to the surface of the Silver Globe, is shifting . Is that still surprising?

At the John F. Kennedy Space Center, preparations are underway for the first flight of the Space Launch System rocket (SLS) , which at least plans to take people back to the moon and to the future Lunar Gateway station, which will revolve around the moon.

In preparation for take-off, the flight control center undergoes numerous tests simulating various take-off scenarios. 48 hours before the launch of the rocket, the entire countdown sequence begins, during which individual teams check the components for which they are responsible and eventually allow or refuse permission to start.

In early February, the entire team from Florida, led by Charlie Blackwell-Thomspon, who was responsible for starting the Artemis 1 mission, simulated the last countdown phase covering the last 10 minutes before the start. These last minutes before the start are an extremely intense period in which, if any problem is discovered, it must be quickly identified, discussed and removed under enormous time pressure.

These types of simulations are not only an opportunity for engineers to test procedures, but also to test the ability to respond to various anomalies of the rocket or ground systems.

The first SLS flight is delayed

In published on February 20 this year. press release NASA mentioned that the launch of the Artemis 1 mission is currently planned for next year.

According to earlier information, the official date of NET (No Earlier Than - not earlier than) was planned for November 2020. Nevertheless, most representatives of the environment mentioned that this is a political movement rather than a reflection of the actual readiness of the rocket.

In connection with the above, the Space Center of John F. Kennedy assumes that the official NET will move to April 18, 2021. George Marshall was instructed to analyze possible flight trajectories for the period from April 18 to May 4, 2021. According to the schedule, trajectory analysis will start in July 2020.

It is worth noting here that the talks conducted between the teams at NASA indicate that in fact preparations are underway for takeoff in spring or summer 2021. Some time ago many NASA documents indicated that the realistic date of the first flight is summer 2021 and spring remains an optimistic term.

After all, the above information indicates that there is strong reason for shifting a manned lunar flight from 2024 to 2028, as Congress demands in a budget proposal. We have already written about the possible shift of the first manned flight to the moon here .
