LG has not yet said the last word. Here is the LG V60 ThinQ 5G

The nearly $ 1 billion loss last year was not enough to take LG smartphones out of the race. The company has just shown the LG V60 ThinQ 5G - a smartphone that will face the new Galaxy S20 .

I didn't expect to tell you the truth. I thought that if LG "zaora" any of its smartphones, it would be a niche V series.

Meanwhile, instead of showing the successor to last year's LG G8, Koreans showed the successor to the LG V50 .

What can LG V60 ThinQ 5G do ?

The name of the device reveals the most important novelty. It is powered by the latest Snapdragon 865 with a 5G modem, and thus, LG V60 ThinQ is ready for a new standard of connectivity.

Another novelty is the ability to record video in 8K with "studio quality" sound, thanks to the quadruple array of microphones and the new camera matrix with a resolution of 64 Mpix.

The full specification is as follows:

  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 with 5G Snapdragon X55 modem
  • Display: 6.8 inches, P-OLED FullVision, 2460 x 1080 px
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM / 128 GB or 256 GB ROM / microSD card (max. 2 TB)
  • Camera: Rear - 64 MP with standard lens (f / 1.8 / 0.8 μm / 78˚) (Pixel Binning technology up to 16 MP resolution); 13 MP with super wide angle lens (f / 1.9 / 1.0 μm / 117˚); Camera Z Camera (ToF transmitter / receiver); Front: 10 MP with standard lens (f / 1.9 / 1.22 μm / 72.5˚)
  • Battery: 5000 mAh
  • Operating system: Android 10
  • Dimensions: 169.3 x 77.6 x 8.9 mm
  • Weight: 214 g
  • Mobile network: 5G / LTE / 3G / 2G
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi 802.11 a, b, g, n, ac, ax / Bluetooth 5.1 / NFC / USB type-C socket (USB 3.1 compatible)
  • Biometric security: a fingerprint reader integrated with the display
  • Colors: blue, white
  • Other: stereo speakers / 4-channel microphones / AI CAM / Google Lens / 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad digital-to-analog converter / LG 3D Sound Engine / HDR10 + sound processor / Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ fast charging / MIL-compatible STD 810G / protection category IP68 - water and dust resistance / LG Pay / FM radio

Following the model from last year's LG V50, you can also buy a second screen for the LG V60, significantly increasing the usability of the device. I am not convinced that in the case of a device with a 6.8 "screen such a connection will be optimal - it may turn out to exceed the capacity of an average pocket.

On the other hand, it is nice that LG not only has not abandoned the headphone connector in the new model, but that it is still driven by a quad 32-bit DAC, which was missing e.g. in LG G8s ThinQ . It is even more pleasing that at first glance there is not a single useless gadget, like the air gestures in the aforementioned G8s.

Of course, 8K video recording is nothing more than a freak at the moment (yes, in the Galaxy S20 also), but at least a useful freak. Similarly to the "voice bokeh" function, i.e. the separation of the foreground when recording sound, thanks to which it will be better to hear what the people are saying on the recording.

But is it enough to even fight against Samsung and other rivals?

Looking at the specifications, the LG V60 ThinQ loses the race before it starts for good.

I am sorry to say, but I do not see here any element that could lead a potential buyer of Samsung Galaxy S20 + and make him buy a new LG smartphone.

Let's look at cameras, for example. While even the mid-range LG K series have a triple camera layout on the back, the LG V60 has only two - 64 Mpix main unit and 13 Mpix sensor with an ultrawide lens (ToF sensor I do not count).

Let's also look at design. The competition slims the frame of their smartphones every year and combines how to hide the front camera here so that it does not disturb the feeling of immersion on the display.

Meanwhile, the LG V60 ThinQ looks basically identical to last year's LG V50, except that it has a 0.4 "larger screen, and the fingerprint reader has been moved from the backs to the display.

LG does not reveal the price of the LG V60 yet, but if it costs as much as the LG V50 at the time of its release, unfortunately - I do not think that even the most faithful fans of the brand will reach for the LG product.

And I write it with a lot of regret, because I'm one of the great LG fans myself. My first Android smartphone was LG Swift. I used LG V30 for almost two years. I still use and praise the LG G8s very much.

However, I'm afraid that the LG V60 ThinQ just can't cope with much better equipped rivals and no sympathy for the brand will help here.

Nevertheless, I look forward to testing. LG V series belong to my favorite Android smartphones, and LG V60 ThinQ looks like a great development of the concept of a multimedia monster, dedicated primarily to lovers of good sound.

And who knows - it may turn out that, although on paper nothing speaks for it, in practice LG V60 ThinQ hides a feature that will tip the scales in its favor.
