Selfie on a cosmic walk. Established on Nikon D5

Selfie from the dearest Nikon DSLR, made in space? I can see such photographs for hours. Let's see what photographic equipment astronauts have at ISS.

Jessica Meir is an astronaut working at NASA. He currently lives not on Earth, but on the International Space Station. Meir, along with five other astronauts , is a member of the 61st ISS mission. The expedition began in October 2019 and will last until February 2020.

For several years, astronauts on the ISS have been thriving on social media, especially on Twitter. They connect to the internet directly from the station and publish entries and dozens of photos of our planet seen from orbit.

Jessica Meir is another astronaut who gives her relationship a personal, human character. You can see it in the selfie photos.

On the Meir profile we will find dozens of beautiful photos showing cities and wild regions of the Earth, but the most popular lately have been photos ... selfies.

Unusual photographs were created during the space walk outside the ISS. During the ongoing mission, there were exactly 9 walks in space so far, each lasting 6 to 7.5 minutes.

The astronaut used the photo to take her reflection in the elements of the sheathing of the International Space Station. In the background we see the atmosphere of the Earth.

Very few people can boast of a similar picture.

The photos were created using Nikon D5.

Jessica Meir took photos using Nikon D5, a top journalistic SLR camera. The lens is a fixed focal length construction of 28 mm, but we do not know in what version. However, I can't imagine NASA using anything other than the top Nikkor 28 mm f / 1.4E ED.

Interestingly, the equipment used by astronauts is no different from what you can buy in stores. These are standard, civil cameras and lenses, except that outside the Station you have to use specially created protective cases isolating the camera from cosmic conditions. On the other hand, the cameras in the station are used without any housings.

This is extremely interesting, especially considering the fact that SLRs have a lot of mechanical components that work well on Earth, but can work differently under zero gravity. I'm curious how the mirror mechanism is doing, which depends on whether the astronaut sees the viewfinder preview.

It is possible, however, that astronauts use the Live View mode, in which the mirror is permanently raised and the image is displayed on the screen. You can see that Jessica Meir is photographing while holding the camera at chest level, which indicates that he is using the Live View mode.

What photographic equipment do astronauts have at their disposal?

NASA has been using Nikon SLRs for years, and at the International Space Station there were all generations of top digital SLRs , from Nikon D1, through D2Xs, D3, D3X, D3S, D4, to D5. In addition, the Station has a Nikon D800E, a special version of the SLR camera, which has no low-pass filter, making the image sharper.

We also know that the ISS has a Sony A7S II mirror, which astronauts record movies. Using this camera in 2016, the first 4K video from the station was recorded.

We don't know much about lenses. We are sure that the station has fixed focal length lenses (such as the Nikkor 28 mm), reporter zooms (including the Nikkor 24-70 mm f / 2.8E ED VR), as well as powerful telephoto lenses, with the Nikkor 800 mm f / 5.6E in the lead FL ED VR, equipped with an additional 1.4x teleconverter, which gives an effective focal length of 1120 mm.

In April 2016, NASA published a YouTube video recorded by Jeff Williams on the ISS. Can be seen on it. among others powerful Nikkor 800 mm, which the astronaut turns in his fingers like a feather. On Earth, a camera with such a lens and a teleconverter weighs 6 kg.

If you want to follow the lives of astronauts on the ISS, check out Twitter. Jessica Meir is not the only astronaut who publishes from the Station. Next to her are also Christina Koch , Luca Parmitano and Andrew Morgan .
