Chromebooks for players? Steam is expected to appear on the Chrome OS version
Chromebook functionality is constantly increasing. They are already compatible with Chrome extensions, web, android and linux applications. And apparently in the foreseeable future with games from Steam.
Cheap, light and simple Chromebooks are unlikely to be associated with gamers. You can play simple games from the browser or from the Play Store - due to both hardware limitations and those resulting from the construction of Chrome OS. This limit is supposed to be significantly expanded.
According to Kan Liu, head of product management in the Chrome OS department in an interview with Android Police , Google is working together with Valve to make Steam service reach PCs with the Google operating system.
Steam on Chrome OS. How would games on Chromebooks work?
Unfortunately, we do not know the technical details yet. Liu only mentioned that this quite groundbreaking novelty in the context of Chromebooks is possible thanks to new AMD integrated circuits, hiding not only a decent CPU, but also efficient graphics systems. But what about compatibility with the games themselves?
Here, unfortunately, we can only speculate. However, it seems very unlikely to somehow manage to transfer games from Windows. If we were to bet, I would bet that Valve and Google would use Chrome OS compatibility with linux applications. In other words, Steam on Chrome OS would have a very similar offer to Steam on Linux.
This of course significantly narrows the usable game catalog. However, this does not change the fact that even this fraction of the offer would be a nice addition for Chromebook owners who would like to play something while traveling. We keep our fingers crossed to succeed.
