The first 5G smartphone in Poland is now on sale. We check Huaweia Mate 20 X 5G

Play has just announced that it was the first operator in Poland to launch Huaweia Mate 20 X 5G, the first smartphone to support new generation connectivity. I spent several weeks with this equipment and I already know if it is worth buying it.

First, let's start with the obvious. Huawei Mate 20 X 5G costs 4399 PLN and at a high price you can conclude that it will be a smartphone from the highest shelf. And it really is. The equipment is well made, perfectly fitted and you can not fault its quality and appearance. The latter is due to ribbed backs made of glass, which look really chic.

The high price defines a great specification.

Huawei Mate 20 X 5G is equipped with everything that the Chinese have the best to offer. The smartphone drives the fastest Huaweia processor, specifically Kirin 980 made in 7 nanometer technology. It is supported by 8 GB RAM and 256 GB internal memory, which can be expanded using proprietary Nano Memory cards (not to be confused with microSD!). All components are cooled by means of cooling with a steam chamber. There were also three rear (wide, normal, portrait) and front cameras, which take very good photos, although worse than those of the P30 Pro.

How does all this look in practice? Well, this phone works like gold, no game and the application is not scary to him, but ... I did not expect anything else. There is no point in writing about communication standards, because all the necessary ones have been used, including NFC. Well, maybe except for the headphone output, which is increasingly rare in standard smartphones.

Great caricatured large screen.

It is a flat OLED display with an impressive 7.2 "diagonal and a resolution of 2244 x 1080 pixels. It supports DCI-P3 and HDR, and its detail doesn't leave much to be desired, unlike the size.

Because what about the fact that games and series look impressive on it, since this smartphone sometimes did not fit in your pants pocket, and operating it with one hand is not so much uncomfortable as simply impossible. This huge screen makes Huawei Mate 20 X 5G is impractical equipment, dedicated to a very narrow audience.

5G network? Who needs it?

However, the most important element of this smartphone is the Balong 5000 modem, which supports 5G connectivity in NSA and SA standards. I had the opportunity to test it recently, thanks to which I found that LTE is outdated and 5G technology is the future . Of course, remember that we will not be able to use 5G too soon, because publicly available networks do not yet exist and will appear only in the future.

This perspective is quite distant, so I will not be surprised that at the time of the introduction of the 5G network in Poland, it will turn out that the Huawei Mate 20 X 5G is an outdated device, an electronic whack that is not worth thinking about. The 5G modem currently does not give Polish users any illusory benefit.

The 5G modem is also the cause of a very big problem.

As it is completely new and takes up a lot of space, it could not be integrated into the processor. Therefore, it was placed in the housing at the expense of the battery. The standard version of Huawei Mate 20 X had cells with a capacity of 5000 mAh, while the 5G variant has a smaller battery 4200 mAh.

On paper, it is quite a good value that allows you to intensively use a typical smartphone throughout the day. However, the word "typical" should be emphasized, because the latest Huawei with its gargantuan screen is not a typical smartphone, so the battery in it runs out during the day. Of course, thanks to SuperCharge technology it can be fully charged in about an hour, but this is rather poor consolation.

I don't know who this smartphone is for.

Huawei Mate 20 X 5G is a classic example of a smartphone that looks phenomenal on paper, but ... it doesn't make any sense. A huge, high-quality display and standard components may suggest that we are dealing with a device intended for players, but the battery negates this. In addition, smartphones for players generally make little sense, because good mobile games is like a cure. Do you want to play on the go? Great, so buy a Nintendo Switch, 3DS or an old PSP, not a smartphone.

Another disadvantage of Huaweia Mate 20 X 5G is the giant screen that makes it in my opinion unusable. The impression can be compounded by the fact that my right hand has been broken for a month, so using a smartphone is generally difficult. So I gave the new Huawei several people to use and each, as one husband said, was a monster, a beast, not a smartphone. Seriously.

The biggest advantage of this model should be a 5G modem, right? Unfortunately, it will not be useful in Poland for many months, if not years. That is why I have the impression that its only function is taking up space that could be used for a larger battery and showing that Huawei already has a smartphone supporting the 5G network on offer.

This is a good marketing procedure that can increase the reputation of a Chinese manufacturer and attract more customers to it. However, it does not make Huawei Mate 20 X worth recommending to most people.
