Canon EOS M6 Mark II and EOS 90D officially. A fast toddler and an SLR detecting the eye
Canon officially presented two new cameras with similar capabilities. It's a Canon EOS M6 Mark II mirrorless camera and an EOS 90D SLR camera.
Canon EOS M6 Mark II and Canon EOS 90D have a common premiere for a reason. We can say that we are dealing with the same camera, only in the reflex and mirrorless version. The list of common components and technologies is surprisingly long.
Both cameras were partially shown during a leak last week . Now, however, we are after the official premiere, so we know everything about them.
Canon EOS M6 Mark II and EOS 90D - what are the new cameras?
EOS M6 Mark II is the second generation of mirrorless for advanced developers. In turn, the EOS 90D is the successor of the very popular EOS 80D SLR, which is liked not only by photographers but also by filmmakers.
The cameras differ in size and lens mounts. The EOS M6 Mark II works with EF-M series lenses, while the SLR has of course an EF / EF-S mount. In addition, the constructions are surprisingly similar.
Both cameras are equipped with the same CMOS matrix APS-C format with a resolution of 32.5 megapixels with Dual Pixel AF technology, supported by a Digic 8 processor. It is worth emphasizing the extremely high resolution. Recently, with the release of the A7R IV (61 megapixels), Sony boasted a very high resolution in APS-C mode: 26 megapixels. Canon shows that you can have a much higher resolution on the APS-C camera.
Both cameras save RAW images in the .cr3 format. Both work on the same ISO speeds in the range 100-25600, expandable to 51200. Both also record 4K video, more on that. Both also have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, and there is no NFC from which Canon is withdrawing.
As a rule, Canon EOS M6 Mark II and EOS 90D will give exactly the same image quality, but they differ in form and type of supported lenses.
The most important feature of the Canon EOS M6 Mark II mirrorless camera is speed.
The mirrorless camera is able to take as many as 14 photos per second with full tracking of focus and exposure. RAW Burst mode is also available, in which for a short time (approx. 2 s) we can take RAW images at a rate of 30 fps. The minimum shutter speed is 1/4000 s.
Autofocus operating on the basis of Dual Pixel AF has as many as 5481 focus points covering 100 percent. vertical frame and 88% horizontally. Selecting a specific point could take too much time, so the user was also given a zone selection mode, which has 143 fields. Autofocus works from –5 EV.
The camera is equipped with a three-inch touch screen and a 180-degree tilt LCD screen, but it does not have a built-in viewfinder. This accessory can be purchased or you can opt for a commercial set with a kit lens and an external viewfinder. The LP-E17 battery allows you to take 250–410 photos, and we can charge it in an external charger or directly in the camera via a USB-C port.
The Canon EOS 90D SLR camera is distinguished by face and eye tracking.
There are few SLRs that support face and eye detection, and these are the features that are available in the EOS 90D. This is possible thanks to the new light measurement system based on 220,000. cells. The predecessor had only ... 7 thousand. cells. Why is that important? These specialized pixels are not only responsible for measuring light, but also for detecting faces and eyes. What's more, the system works even when the mirror is lowered, so it is a real sensation.
The SLR can do 10 fps with full AF tracking, and the minimum mechanical shutter speed is 1/8000 sec. In turn, when using the electronic shutter you can go down to 1/16000 sec. The camera has 45 AF points, all of which are cross-shaped. Autofocus works from –3 EV. A joystick for choosing AF points is a big novelty compared to the predecessor.
The battery remained unchanged, but due to more energy-saving components, the number of photos on one charge increased by as much as 400, from 900 to 1300. The SLR is made of partly aluminum alloys and partly of polycarbonate. It is fully sealed.
Both new cameras record in 4K without crop.
Both cameras record in 4K resolution (3840x2160) without using crop in 30 fps. Full HD mode at 120 fps is also available, also without crop. Canon emphasizes that there is also a light crop mode to choose from, which has two advantages: smaller rolling shutter and better image sharpness. However, this is associated with faster heating of the cameras. Both cameras offer digital image stabilization, similar to that of the EOS R.
The Canon EOS 90D is equipped with a microphone and headphone jack, and in the mirrorless EOS M6 Mark II we will only find a microphone connector. Importantly, during recording, we can also use face and eye detection autofocus, both in the mirrorless camera and the reflex camera. The latter in the movie mode (and with photos in the Live View mode) has the same parameters and capabilities as the M6 Mark II mirrorless camera.
