8chan accused of inspiring the shooting in El Paso. The head of Cloudflare called the site a hatred cloak

8chan is a cesspool - declares CEO Coludflare and ends cooperation with the service.

Cloudflare, one of the largest companies providing infrastructure and security network services, no longer wants to have anything to do with 8chan. Matthew Prince, CEO of the company, announced on the blog that he is terminating cooperation and ceases to provide the site with any services. The drop that shed the bitterness was the publication of the hateful manifesto by the shooter from El Paso.

Tragic weekend in the United States.

It was a terrible end of the week for US residents. In Dayton, Ohio, the 24-year-old opened fire on the street and started shooting at pedestrians. Nine people were killed and 30 were injured. In El Paso, Texas, the perpetrator opened fire in a supermarket. 21 people were killed and 26 were injured. Both tragedies happened in just 24 hours.

The perpetrator of the El Paso shooting before he entered Walmart published his racist manifesto on 8ch. He was the third shooter to do so since March. The choice of medium is not accidental here, because although it does not provide such coverage as YouTube or Facebook, it guarantees something else. Nobody will remove content published there, and readers will be scorching their faces with the last words of the killer.

Prince calls 8chan a hatred cloak.

It was there that the shooter could read the manifesto published by the perpetrator of the Christchurch massacre in New Zealand, to which he later referred. It was there that he could read the Poway shooter's open letter there. There, he could also fantasize about his own glory, absorbing comments praising the perpetrators of the massacres. Nobody moderates this.

This is the whole idea of 8chana. Its creators defend themselves against accusations, repeating with persistence that the appearance of such content is the price of freedom of speech, the supreme law they adhere to. However, not everyone is convinced by this argument.

Prince in a post justifying his decision says:

[8chan] proved that he had no laws and this led to many tragic deaths. Even if 8chan did not violate the letter of the law by refusing to moderate his hateful community, he created an environment that entertains his spirit.

Without deluding yourself that it will change anything.

This is not the first time Cloudflare has reacted in this way. In 2017, after the Charlottesville massacre, the company kicked Daily Stormer out of its clients , but, as she admits, nothing changed in the operation of the site.

Prince realizes that it will be like that now. Cloudflare does not provide unique services, it is not exclusive to the internet or protection against DDosami. The company simply got rid of the problem from its garden. However, this does not mean that the problem will disappear. It is deep as our hatred, and this, looking at what happened at the weekend in the United States, can be immeasurable.
