The bike, which can not be stolen, was stolen in 60 seconds. Also this

The manufacturer claims that he created an electric bike that can not be stolen. It has a built-in SIM card, wheel lock and tracking via GPS. The journalists carried out a test in which ... they unscrewed the tracking module and stole the bike. We will still have to wait for the revolution.

Stealing bikes is a huge problem, as I found out in primary school when my own single unit disappeared from the basement. It was a big experience and an even greater lesson. Today I drive everywhere with U-lock fixing, although I am aware that it can be overcome. However, U-lock is supposed to act as a disincentive to a potential thief.

However, there are producers who approach the topic from the technological side. VanMoof, a Dutch (and how!) Bike manufacturer, created an electric two-wheeler, which apparently can not be stolen. The equipment costs 2800 euros, looks like a dream and has a whole sea of electronics inside.

How do you protect your bike that you can not steal?

The VanMoof Electrified S2 bike, apart from the electric drive, is equipped with its own operating system with the possibility of Over-the-air upgrade. The bike has a display in the frame showing the speed and level of the battery, but the most interesting look are security issues. The manufacturer assumes that you do not have to attach your bike anywhere when you leave it in the city. We leave it like a scooter or a motorcycle, and the built-in security ensures that no one steals it.

In practice, the rear wheel is equipped with a built-in lock, which we activate by moving one element in the rear part of the frame. After locking the bike, he can travel a maximum of half a meter, because that is the inertia of the security. The user can remove the lock electronically, in a mobile application, or by entering a special code by sequentially pressing the brakes. Optionally, the lock can also be deactivated automatically when the bicycle detects via Bluetooth the presence of a user who has an application connected to the bicycle.

According to the manufacturer, the lock can not be mechanically removed. If you try to forcefully remove it, an alarm will sound. If the thief does not stop trying, the alarm will be louder and the bike will start actively tracking your position via GPS and will immediately send the data to the owner's mobile application. This is accomplished thanks to the GSM communication built into the bike. This means that even after the theft, we know exactly where the bike is. And if someone would like to steal the bike without removing the blocks, it would be extremely difficult, because the equipment weighs 19 kg.

And what if the thief turns out to be a blockbuster who moves a nineteen-kilometer bicycle through the city? The manufacturer has the answer to this event, which is the optional Peace of Mind subscription service, under which the employees of the company will take care of the bike. If they fail, the customer will receive a new model of the same bike or a newer version. This makes theft cease to be a concern for the user and becomes a problem for the manufacturer.

Sounds good, right? The system can be broken in a minute.

DigitalTrends journalists decided to bypass all electronics during the bike test. The entire bicycle's brain can be screwed out of the frame using Torx T-10 and T-30 screwdrivers. First you have to unscrew the saddle and then the part with the computer. The second one can be pulled out of the frame through the saddle opening. In this way we get access to the SIM card, which can be removed, making it impossible to track the vehicle.

The producer of course responded to these allegations by posting on his blog . He accuses journalists of spreading fake news . According to the manufacturer, removing the GSM module does not unlock the rear wheel, so cycling is not possible.

Journalists answer that in their film they did not actually block the rear wheel before removing the module, but only due to the fact that during the movie there was no alarm that would drown the expert talking about what he was doing. Journalists claim that on another attempt they removed the module after the lock was previously activated, which resulted in unlocking the wheel. The producer claims that it is impossible. So we have a word against the word.

Unfortunately, the very possibility of unscrewing all the electronics of the bike with the help of publicly available tools looks terrible.

Especially, for a bike for 2800 euros, in which safety, GPS tracking and cooperation with the application is one of the flagship functions.

What to do then? Personally, I've come to terms with the idea that there is no security that can not be broken. I bet on a solid piece of metal. A good U-lock or chain will not allow one hundred per cent to avoid theft, but it will certainly cause the potential thief to demotivate.
