FaceApp defends itself against the charges. "We do nothing wrong, we respect your privacy"

FaceApp has gained popularity twice. For the first time, it turned out that this is a cool program for aging seltyów. For the second time, it turned out that the application sends our pictures to the cloud. Spy? The accused rejects the charges.

A dozen or so hours ago, living in a blissful unconsciousness, we exchanged funny pictures created with the help of FaceApp . The application works surprisingly well, convincingly converting our physiognomy into old. Unfortunately, as it turned out today , FaceApp is a very voracious service for our data.

The application claims the right to collect our content and, which is particularly alarming, declares that it can share them with its partners. Understanding the content of the regulations and interpreting the application's permissions: FaceApp becomes a co-owner of our images and related information about us.

There have already been several conspiracy theories that the application captures all the photos from our phone, and not only those imported into it, but it was fortunately turned out to be untrue. Sharing our pictures with subjects completely alien to us is a very bad idea. Although it is worth remembering that most popular social services are equally greedy for our data.

FaceApp refutes allegations of serious privacy violations

In its statement, sent to TechCrunch , the company claims that:

  • Photo editing takes place in the cloud. Only photos indicated by the user are sent to her.
  • Photos remain in the server cache to speed up the service. "Most photos" (why not all?) Are removed after 48 hours.
  • The user can report to technical support and request that all data about him be removed, which will be fulfilled.
  • User data is not shared with external entities (so why is this information included in the application regulations?).
  • FaceApp does not hold user data in Russia. Uses AWS clouds and Google Cloud.

FaceApp developers also call on independent security specialists to confirm the above. The problem is that they can confirm - which they already did - only the first of these points. FaceApp does not send all the pictures from our phone, but only those that we recommend.

However, the problem is not the fact of sending a photo to the cloud for processing. - We may share User content and user information with companies that are legally part of the same group of companies, part of which is FaceApp, or that become part of this group ("Partners"). Partners may use this information to help deliver, understand and improve the Service and their Partner's services - which Marcin found in the terms of service.

I understand that FaceApp needs access to the photo to be able to work it and it is difficult to have a problem with it. However, the business model of selling my photos to entities unknown to me is invariably absolutely unacceptable.
