The smartphone is distinguished not only by the top specification, but also the splendid OLED 4K screen and three cameras. Let's start with how the device is in the palm of your hand.

Looking at the specification, you can come to the conclusion that the Sony Xperia 1 is a huge smartphone. A 6.5-inch screen on paper sounds like a monster that's closer to the tablet than to a smartphone.

Nothing could be more wrong. Xperia 1 is certainly a large smartphone, but thanks to the extended screen with the aspect ratio of 21: 9, the device is not as big as it might seem. It is long, definitely longer than other smartphones, but its width does not deviate from the market standard. Without the slightest problem, we will reach with the thumb to the left edge of the screen, but this art will not work with the top edge.

The frames around the screen are very narrow, but at the same time wide enough to have a front camera and speaker at the top. This is good information for people who do not accept indentations and openings in the screen.

The layout of the front is slightly different than in the case of the Xperia 10 Plus, in which the lower and side frames have the same thickness, and the upper one was clearly wider. In Xperia 1, a slightly thicker lower frame was placed, but at the same time the upper one is much thinner. Live the whole looks nice and modern.

The screen reproduces 100 percent. color space DCI-P3 and allows you to play UHD movies in the BT.2020 standard.

Sony boasts of technologies transferred from TVs and from the cinema world. The quality of the screen is ensured by the mobile version of the X1 processor known from Bravia TV sets and CineAlta technologies modeled on the Master series reference monitors.

So much theory, and how does it look in practice? Sensational, if the source material is a UHD movie with 4K resolution, a wide range of colors and with HDR. Such materials are already on streaming websites (even at Netflix), and even on YouTube. "Our Planet" activated on the Xperia 1 screen simply knocks off the legs. The reader is active, so you do not need to highlight the screen to unlock the device.

Sony's return to readers mounted on the side of the device is a great decision. I have the impression that the market is recently stretched. Most manufacturers have given up physical readers going into scanners integrated with the screen, and for now they are slower and less accurate. The scanner in the frame does not spoil the appearance of the device, and at the same time provides a much higher quality of performance than scanners in the screen.

On the right frame there are also volume buttons (designed better than in Xperia 10), a switch and a very characteristic element for Sony smartphones: a two-stage shutter button.

At the bottom there is a loudspeaker mask and a USB-C port, and at the top there is a hybrid tray for two SIM cards or SIM and microSD. The tray can be removed without a pin.

Sony Xperia 1 is equipped with the latest Snapdragon 855 processor, supported by 6 GB RAM and 128 GB of built-in memory with the possibility of expanding by a microSD card with a capacity of up to 512 GB. The power should not be lacking. The whole works under the control of Android 9 Pie with a non-destructive, lightweight Sony overlay. So it's what to test. For now, I managed to do literally a few test shots and it looks like we're dealing with a very good camera. The wide angle lens in the default mode has a very visible barrel distortion, but in the options we can turn on the correction of distortion, after which the images are completely straightened.

The camera has good colors and contrasts and very efficient HDR. For wider applications will come time after a longer test of the device. Sony also puts a lot of attention on video recording, offering, among others, Cinema Pro application equipped with in color profiles of the image, but we will also test this in the coming weeks.

Remember that this is not a review but only the first impressions. However, if Sony performs as well as the first day in the next few weeks, it's a complete smartphone. It is fast, very nice, has a sensational screen and a successful, universal set of cameras.
