Imagine that Wi-Fi routers are illegal. Nightmare? Until now this was the case in Cuba

Your own Wi-Fi in Cuba will finally be legal. The island authorities have legalized private Wi-Fi networks and introduced permission to import routers.

No internet or illegal antennas, smuggled equipment and translation of pissed off tourists that you can not give them a password for Wi-Fi, because Wi-Fi in the hotel is simply not there - all this is about to go away to the past. In Cuba, the era of very limited Internet access is ending. The era only begins a little limited .

Internet? Who needs the internet in communist paradise?

The world of Wi-Fi benefits can be enjoyed for twenty years. From the perspective of the government of Cuba, everything looks different. If it is known that it is worth only to listen to the leader and his party, the only legitimate news is provided by governmental media, and rampant American propaganda is rampant, you can actually conclude that this whole internet is seriously overrated. Slowly, however, they even see that the liberalization of access to the network has its advantages.

The first major change occurred in 2013, when Kuba started using a fiber linking it to Venezuela. This drastically improved the quality of the Internet available on the island, and although the representatives of the government and tourists benefited from the Internet breakthrough at the time, the door to the colorful world of memes and social media has been slightly ajar.

In 2015, relations between Kuba and the Internet continued to improve . It was then that there was a staggering 35 open hot spots, government Internet cafes started offering faster internet at a lower price, and the broadband internet network was spreading for the whole country on a few new streets (new connections really go slowly). Already in 2016, less than 39 percent . Cubans used the network (compared to 73.3 percent of such lucky ones in Poland).

More internet!

The new regulations do not mean that until now there were no private Wi-Fi networks in Cuba. As is often the case with this type of regulations, the networks were, but illegal, and the authorities closed their eyes to them. Residents who wanted to use the state-threatening routers had to smuggle them to the island and then create illegal local networks.

From July 29, this will change. The new equipment will be able to arrive in the glory and praise of factory packaging, not travel pupyychany under the fourth bottom hidden in boats, the suitcase. This is a big change especially for the tourism industry, whose representatives will finally be able to offer their Wi-Fi customers.

The situation in Cuba has not been so difficult for years.

The economic crisis is flourishing, and the situation in Cuba from bad turns into fatal. Kuba has no developed own production, and almost two-thirds of the food needed to feed citizens comes from imports. To prevent the escalation of the crisis, the authorities have introduced rationing of how much one customer can buy. The biggest problem is the shortage of basic products such as eggs, rice, poultry and soap.

The authorities for the bad economic situation blame the embargo introduced by Donald Trump, but this is only part of the truth. The Venezuela's problems also affected the island's situation. Until now, it exported oil to Cuba, which it could sell with profit.

According to the National Post , the Minister of Trade Betsy Diaz Velazquez said on TV that although in March 900,000 fewer eggs were produced than the daily demand for Cubans, in mid-April the shortage decreased to 600,000. Thousands of people standing in huge queues breathed a sigh of relief.

Kuba is not afraid of the Internet spring.

According to local and well-informed, because governmental, media, new regulations are to help in the development of tourism. Even the view of the most magnificent mountains, the oldest cars and the most-powerful cigars will not help when the western man finds out that the hotel will not be able to use Wi-Fi. Well, what's this holiday without a nose in Facebook and the ability to upload photos of your cuba libre on Instagram with free Wi-Fi in the bar?

However, the Internet is not just an equivalent of bread that can be thrown to the public to silence the sounds of rumbling in the stomachs and lure tourists. It can also be dangerous.

The United States tried to create ZunZuneo , a Cuban Twitter alternative, in the years 2009-2012. The plan was simple - involve as many people as possible in the project, starting with innocent content about football, music or weather. Only when there were enough Cubans in the network would it begin to distribute political content that could inspire island residents to overthrow power or at least organize mass protests.

In the best months, the website was used by over 40,000 people, however, the plan has never been completed until the end. Because of the need to hide US involvement in the Cuban government, the project was expensive. He finished when the money ran out.

It sounds like an attempt to inspire the Arab spring in Cuba. According to many, the wave of protests, which swept, among others, through Tunisia, Egypt, Jordan, Yemen, Bahrain, Libya, Syria and Iraq, broke out thanks to the Internet, and more specifically access to social media.

Twitter and Facebook helped protesters to communicate and coordinate activities, and above all acted as an alternative source of information for official media. The researchers are still arguing about the real impact of social media on the course and outbreak of protests in 2010-2012, but the Cuban authorities must be aware of the fact that the potential threat exists not only in the heads of dormitories.

Giving citizens access to Wi-Fi, the authorities keep their ace in the sleeve. The only internet provider from which Cubans will be able to use is the government-controlled Etecsa telecommunications company.
