I took off my smartwatch to see if it was still worth buying a regular watch in 2019

For several years, instead of a traditional watch, I wear a smartwatch. And although I appreciate the convenience of a smart watch, I sometimes wonder if it is better to put on a regular timer on the wrist. Is it worth buying a regular watch in 2019?

Smart watches have many advantages . First of all, they facilitate the filtering of notifications, completely cutting us off those unwanted ones and ensuring that the most important ones will certainly reach us. They enable convenient multimedia control. They allow you to follow trainings and analyze their course. You can install various applications on them, radically expanding the spectrum of their capabilities.

It can not be concealed, however, that smartwatches also have many disadvantages, and judging from the fact that the smartwatch market is still difficult to call "mature", for many people these drawbacks overshadow all the benefits of wearing a smart watch.

I spent most of my time criticizing the smart watches, but there are three disadvantages that still make it difficult to get on the agenda:

Smartwatches are filigree and ... not very beautiful.

I can overcome their dubious beauty, but endurance is something else. Not counting things like the Casio Pro Trek WSD-F30 , smart watches can not handle even a fraction of what a traditional watch can endure, especially when talking about strictly outdoor models.

Their protective glasses are more susceptible to scratching (and - unlike mineral or hexalite glasses - they are not easy to polish), casings usually have a shock-resistant design, and the level of waterproofness is very different from the one we meet even in cheap, traditional watches.

Working time on one charge is a joke.

Even when we talk about the champions of this competition, we look at the mountain a few days away from the socket. The standard is a day. And as the batteries in modern electronics are rapidly degrading, with time the situation is deteriorating. My current smartwatch with Wear OS, which at the beginning lasted about 1.5 days on a single charge, is currently calling for power before 18:00.

Meanwhile, traditional watches are holding for years. Not to mention automatic timers, which are simply not replaced by energy sources, because they work as long as we provide them with a few turns of the wrist from time to time.

Smartwatches are expensive products with a short expiration date.

The average smartwatch, so worth recommending, is a minimum cost of PLN 1,000. The average life expectancy of such a device? Maybe two years. Maybe three or four, if we're talking about the most expensive Fossil models. Maybe a year if we're talking about the cheapest models of Wear OS.

Anyway - just a few short years will allow a relatively expensive smartwatch to become useless electro-waste. Whether due to the degradation of components, the whip of support by the manufacturer or incompatible software updates - the smart watch is waiting for a quick end.

Meanwhile, the same (or less) traditional watch, no matter whether analog or digital, will serve us for many, many years. Maybe even to death. Ba, maybe even he will serve long after our death. In any case, it will perform its function incomparably longer than a smartwatch.

Despite the above drawbacks, smartwatches are an obviously "better" product than traditional watches. They are modern, they can do more, they fit better into the modern world. But are you sure?

Recently, I had the opportunity to test the traditional, digital, outdoor watch Timex Boost Shock TW5M26100. I willingly used it to find out how much I would miss the smartwatch and whether buying a regular watch in 2019 is actually such a bad (or good) idea.

Timex Boost Shock

Taking advantage of the long weekend, I took off my smartwatch, put on a traditional watch and ... the effects surprised me a lot.

Can a traditional watch replace a smartwatch?

Yes and no. It obviously does not replace the typical "smart" functions, such as forwarding notifications, multimedia control or measuring activity. But other than that?

Doing a short examination of conscience, I realized what I'm really using the smart watch for the most, apart from the "smart" functions mentioned above.

Most often - of course - I check what time it is. I measure the time needed to brew coffee in aeropress. I count the breaks between the series of exercises in the gym. I write not so much kilometers traveled, what time spent on dog walks.

Amazingly, Timex Boost Shock has been more than enough in these applications. It gives time, it's obvious. It has a built-in stopwatch, so coffee brewing was still in accordance with the art, and the breaks between exercises in the gym were well measured (maybe even better, because the stopwatch did not hang during the counting, which happened to me with smartwack ...). I could not measure how many kilometers I had traveled, but the built-in chronometer counted the time spent on walks with millisecond accuracy.

Timex Boost Shock

If I wanted, I could also measure intervals or set up two alarm clocks. In other words - most of the time I did not miss the smartwatch on the wrist. Timex Boost Shock also has three defects, which I mentioned at the beginning of this text:

Timex Boost Shock is definitely not filigree and can be enjoyed.

The envelope is 47 mm wide and made of resin, thanks to which it is hellishly resistant to damage. I checked it empirically during a fast run through the forest, hitting the casing against a tree in full swing. I have no doubt that my smartwatch would be suitable only for disposal after such a clash. He did not leave a trace on Timeks.

From the aesthetic side, Boost Shock also has its charm. Of course, this is not a watch that suits every creation and suit, but when it comes to outdoor watches, it just looks good. Although it must be honestly admitted that while the envelope can tolerate dirt, a silicone strip should be washed several times a week, because dirt clings to its grooves.

Timex Boost Shock

Working time is not a worry.

The manufacturer states that the need to replace the battery will only take two years. I admit, it was strange to go to sleep without having to put the watch on the dock. Refreshing.

This watch will probably survive me, and it costs pennies.

Timex Boost Shock TW5M26100 costs less than 400 PLN , and is made to meet any challenge. During a few weeks of tests I noticed in fact only two disadvantages, or maybe rather irritating features of the watch, which may be a bit of a hit - the buttons are difficult to push, especially in gloves, and the shield is set too deep under the glass, so in the harsh light not always the electronic dial is clearly visible.

There is no problem with noticing time or measurements at night - just press the button that activates the Indiglo electroluminescent light so that the numbers glow with green light.

Timex Boost Shock

The whole is waterproof up to 200 m - unlike smartwatches - it is not mild detergent such as washing up liquid or bath. He is not afraid of salt water, which I checked on my own skin in the Baltic Sea.

Changing the smartwatch to a traditional watch is not easy, but it brings some unexpected benefits.

I admit, it was difficult for me to get used to the fact that the watch does not notify me of incoming messages or calls. Often I missed a phone call from my wife and a messenger notification because I just forgot to turn off the "do not disturb" mode on my smartphone.

After a few days without a smartwatch on the wrist, I discovered unexpected psychological benefits.

Timex Boost Shock

I'm calmer. Nothing distracts me, vibrating on my wrist. I do not get excited when I just want to check the time, and the watch either has the screen off, or it discharges or hangs (especially severe in Watches from the Wear OS).

When training at the gym, I do not care about the number of repetitions, and just calmly measure the time to the next series. Going for a walk with a dog I do not count his quality with the number of kilometers traveled and the quality of the time spent. Oddly, since I do not count the kilometers traveled, the walks have become longer and more pleasant.

Timex Boost Shock

Is it worth buying a regular watch in 2019?

This is not a question that can be answered unambiguously. One will provide comfort and modernity over charm and durability, whoever else prefers a timeless design, solid construction and longevity.

After a few weeks of testing, and especially after the last days with only the usual watch, I have to say that buying a "backward", "non-repeating" timer may be more sensible than it seems at first glance.

Not to mention that the world of traditional timepieces is much more fascinating than the world of "smart" watches and - despite what technological geeks may think - quite progressive.

I can not say that I was an expert in this matter, but if the Timeks Boost Shock test convinced me, it is just that traditional watches are a niche that is definitely worth exploring.
