The Polish-Ukrainian information day of the COPERNICUS program will take place in Warsaw

On April 18, a meeting about the Earth observation program will take place in Warsaw. The organizers of the event were: Polish Space Agency, Embassy of Ukraine in Warsaw and the Ministry of Entrepreneurship and Technology.

Copernicus is an Earth observation and monitoring program, created on the initiative of the European Union and the European Space Agency. The program provides data on the planet and the environment to improve the lives of European citizens.

The program provides current data via satellites, terrestrial ground observation centers and sensors installed on planes and ships. The information obtained is used for private, scientific and commercial purposes. These data are used by EU citizens, government agencies, entrepreneurs and scientists.

One of the EU requirements is to provide free access to data obtained under the Copernicus program.

The Copernicus program is useful in various areas, including climate change monitoring, sustainable development, regional and local planning, transport and mobility, agriculture, health care and maritime surveillance.

The widespread use of information provided under the Copernicus program makes it easier to monitor the environment, including accelerating the response to natural disasters such as floods or forest fires.

Sentinel satellites were launched into orbit as part of the Copernicus Earth observation program.

Not so long ago, only satellite commanders or scientists from the space sector in America or Russia could see pictures from satellites. However, in 2014, a space revolution took place - thanks to the EU initiative, as part of the Copernicus program, the first Sentinel satellite was launched into orbit. Supervision and responsibility for the construction of the Sentinel shall be borne by the European Space Agency.

The task of the Sentinel satellite is to systematically collect information. This information, in turn, is made available free of charge to the citizens of European Union countries in the form of various initiatives implemented by the Copernicus program.

Currently, the family of these satellites includes seven objects: Sentinel-1A, Sentinel-1B, Sentinel-2A, Sentinel-2B, Sentinel-3A, Sentinel-5P and Sentinel-3B. The last of them was launched in April 2018, the plan to launch further dates back to 2035.

The photos are much better quality than those available from NASA. This is due to the technological advantage - European satellites are newer and offer a greater variety of data than their American counterpart. On the one hand, the data is current - new images go to the repository already a few hours after the satellite's flight, which is an advantage over Google - and at the same time contain so many parameters that they can be used successfully by the space industry, government agencies, business, as well as and Kowalski - even to illustrate the scale of natural disasters - explains Stanisław Dałek , vice president of CloudFerro, a company dealing with the processing of satellite data.

Copernicus is implementing the DIAS project.

The data received by the Sentinel satellites would not be so helpful if there were no proper tools for their detailed processing.

To this end, the European Union and the European Space Agency have initiated a DIAS project that includes the creation of five European database centers for the processing of satellite information.

It is thanks to such centers that data can be processed and used by other companies to provide services. DIAS platforms should not only store data collected by Sentinels, but also provide information to representatives of companies, organizations and agencies.

Thanks to this approach, the European space industry has the opportunity to develop and implement its mission without having to invest its own money in obtaining the necessary data. It is also an opportunity for small businesses to create additional services based on satellite data.

This means that if a person wants to develop a startup in the space industry, he can use the data obtained by the Sentinel satellites for free to implement his plan.

The CreoDIAS platform is the largest project in the history of the Polish space industry.

The CreoDIAS platform is a large data warehouse, containing over 7.5 PB of information received from satellites. Platform users have access to all this data at their fingertips on a laptop or tablet.

Data is stored locally on CreoDIAS servers, and the platform enables interested companies to create advanced services, end-user products and offer them at CreoDIAS Marketplace and Front Office.

The CreoDIAS platform aims to increase the number of people using satellite data, stimulate innovation and create new business models based on information from space.

In the autumn of 2017, the following organizations have won the contract for the CreoDIAS project, including the Polish ones: Creotech Instruments SA, CloudFerro Sp. z o. o., Wroclaw Institute of Spatial Information and Artificial Intelligence, Eversis, Sinergise and Geomatys.

There has not been such a large research project in the history of the Polish space industry. It is estimated at around 15 million euros.

From August 2018, satellite data is available to all interested parties on the project website .

Joint Polish-Ukrainian Conference on the Copernicus program

On April 18, during the Polish-Ukrainian information day , the benefits for European society resulting from the implementation of the DIAS project will be presented.

Representatives of Polish and foreign organizations participating in the project will share their views and experiences, including: Creotech Instruments SA, CloudFero Sp. z o. o., Astri Polska, Wroclaw Institute of Spatial Information and Artificial Intelligence, and many others.

During the conference, it will also be possible to conduct individual meetings and negotiations on potential areas of cooperation. In the second part of the event, B2B meetings are planned for representatives of Polish and Ukrainian organizations. The organizers hope that Polish projects will attract partners from Ukraine.

The idea of organizing a joint conference - Ukrainian and Polish - devoted to the Copernicus program, was born during the visit of representatives of the Polish space sector in Ukraine, organized by the Polish Space Agency in October 2018. Ukrainian enterprises have competences and knowledge that allow them to participate in this European program as subcontractor.
