Photo-Wednesday: what they say about the Huaweia P30 Pro is true

The Huawei P30 Pro is referred to as a breakthrough and a whole new hand. After a few days with this device, I see that these rumors are not exaggerated at all.

At the beginning I want to point out that I have been testing the Huawei P30 Pro for several days, and this is not enough to prepare a full photo test carried out under different lighting conditions. However, I made so many photos with a smartphone that I want to share with you the most important impressions.

In terms of specifications, the Huawei P30 Pro has everything you'd expect from a flagship mobile camera in 2019. Plus a few extras.

The main camera Huawei P30 Pro has 40 megapixels, but in the default mode four pixels are combined into one, and the resulting resolution of the photo is 10 megapixels. The lens's brightness is f / 1.6 and it is stabilized. It is worth noting that the camera sensor is very large for a smartphone and has a diagonal of 1 / 1.7 inches, so much that until recently in advanced compacts.

The f / 2.2 wide-angle lens works with a 20-megapixel sensor and hides a lot of curiosity. It is autofocus allowing sharpening from 2.5 cm, which allows operation in the supermakro mode. The effects are amazingly good.

The telephoto lens, on the other hand, is a periscope construction with a focal length equivalent to 125 mm, which gives an approximation of x5 relative to the basic lens. Such a telephoto lens on smartphones has not yet existed, because most devices have x2 or x3 zoom. The lens has a very average brightness of f / 3.4, but makes up for stabilization.

We also have a ToF sensor for depth of field detection.

How does the Huawei P30 Pro zoom?

Scene number one is below. I took all the photos from the same place.

And here is the scene number two.

In the pictures we can see the frames from ultra-wide angle (x0.6), standard (x1) lens, telephoto lens (x5), hybrid zoom (x10) and maximum digital zoom (x50).

In the x50 position, the quality of course falls drastically, but such a large magnification of the photo from the smartphone makes a huge impression. A photo at x50 magnification retains 10 megapixels.

Due to the construction of the camera, the zoom between x1 and x5 is performed digitally, which results in lower quality. For example, a magnification of x4,9 looks quite average, while switching to x5 gives a lot more detail because the camera uses a telephoto lens. If the light is missing, the camera even in the x5 mode uses crop, and unfortunately it happens often, especially in interiors.

The biggest impression in the Huawei P30 Pro does night mode

The amazing night mode was now available in the P20 Pro, and after some time it was also added as an update to Mate 10 Pro. However, none of these smartphones can compete with the picture that the Huawei P30 Pro generates at night. For a quick comparison I had mentioned Huaweia Mate 10 Pro, a smartphone from 1.5 years ago. See what the comparison with P30 Pro looks like.

The smartphone literally photographs in the dark. Even if the lights are completely gone, and I shoot blindly, the smartphone is able to take a picture that will show something. It is enough, however, that there will be a minimal source of light to make the picture well-exposed and to have a great color scheme. The world of mobile photography has not seen such effects yet.

Even if we use a full machine, the camera will take good night shots. However, if you switch to a dedicated night mode, the exposure time will increase to a few to several dozen seconds. The camera is processed with such a hand-held exhibition into a completely sharp, motionless frame full of details and ... colors. It is the saturation of the colors that makes a great impression in the P30 Pro night mode.

The night fish in P30 Pro is unbelievably good.

In addition, Huawei improved video stabilization

Both P20 Pro and Mate 20 Pro were struggling with video stabilization errors. The sides of the frame often floated , which spoiled the picture. This time, such a mistake does not occur, and for this stabilization is very efficient and works even at 4K.

And how is the ToF sensor falling and blurring the background?

There is no particular improvement in this field. Yes, the silhouette is cut really well, but can you see a smooth transition between the plans? Honestly, the programmed blur still can not match the real blurring achieved by dedicated cameras.

An interesting fact is that the matrix of the Huawei P30 Pro main camera is so large that in combination with the f / 1.6 lens it allows very large physical blurring of the background. Few smartphones can in this area separate the background from the foreground using the same optics.

In conclusion, the Huawei P30 Pro has made a great impression on me with the quality of the photos.

Fivefold magnification in telephoto, as well as a very useful wide angle, it's a perfect set for traveling. Huawei P30 Pro can be a great holiday camera. On a daily basis, the supermakro mode, which is also a rarity in smartphones, works very well. The icing on the cake is, however, the night mode, which copes literally in the worst conditions. The P30 Pro is a huge step forward not only for Huaweia, but also for the entire mobile photography market.
