4K and HDR are just some of the solutions that have made television change beyond recognition

For a long time, we could not take full advantage of our modern televisions. In recent months, however, much good has started to happen on the Polish market. This is a good opportunity to look at the magic that most modern TV providers use.

UHD (Ultra High Definition) is an image format that has definitely reached its maturity. Most TV sets sold in Poland and in the world are the most compatible with UHD. In part due to the growing demand for this type of equipment, but also in part due to the fact that producers are gradually withdrawing from the Full HD format. It's harder and harder to find a TV in the store that does not support UHD.

The problem is that at least on the Polish market, the availability of UHD content was quite limited. Of course, we are talking about traditional television, because the largest VoD service providers on the market have been offering materials in this format for a long time. Fortunately, it's changing for the better, which we'll come back to. For now, it is worth looking at the greatest benefits that it provides - from the technical side - with modern television. Both by the UHD format itself, as well as other accompanying solutions.

4K Ultra HD resolution, meaning a sharper and clearer picture

The matrix in each TV set consists of individual pixels. So from the points that shine in a given color or brightness. Let's say that we would like to display a heart on the TV screen and find out that we are using a TV with an extremely low number of pixels. On a television that does not exist in reality, this little heart will look like this:

The above picture is far from perfect. You can see individual squares (pixels) from which the picture is made. We can even count them. If we had a matrix containing more pixels, our heart would look much more realistically.

The image broadcast by the most conservative TV stations consists of 768 pixels horizontally and 576 pixels vertically. The stations broadcasting in Full HD are a picture with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. Meanwhile, 4K resolution is up to 3840 x 2160 pixels. This means that in principle we are no longer able to see the individual points that make up the picture on the TV. As a result, it is extremely sharp and you can see even the smallest details on it.

HDR (High Dynamic Range). What does this "image dynamics" mean?

We already know that the picture on the TV consists of many individual pixels. But these pixels, to be visible, must shine with some light. Modern televisions are able to manipulate their brightness in a much wider way than expected by the current television image transfer standards. In response to their technical capabilities, the HDR format was created.

HDR thus increases the range of the span between dark and light tones on the screen. Translating from technical to human: an HDR image projected on a TV compatible with this format is able to highlight the differences between the darkest and the lightest elements on the screen to a much greater extent. Colors can be more vivid and natural, and the setting sun can be bright enough to provoke squinting.

WCG (Wide Color Gamut), that is all colors occurring in nature

HDR discussed above increases the realism of colors and brightness. Still, these colors are taken from the pool provided for in the given standard. HD TV provides a color palette of 16.7 million colors. This number sounds like something huge and completely enough. The problem is that the human eye distinguishes 7 billion colors. And suddenly, the value of 16.7 million colors ceases to sound impressive.

Partial - still imperfect - the solution to this problem is of course the widening of the color palette. The newest format used in the television industry, or WCG, covers one billion colors. And so incomparably more than 16.7 million in regular Full HD. The consequences of using WCG are obvious, the picture looks even more realistic and attractive.

HFR (High Frame Rate), which is an even smoother picture

We already know that pixels, hues and brightness define the picture on the TV. We still have the last thing, the so-called cage. Because television is a moving image, not a static one. A typical television signal predicts that the television will refresh the whole image 25 times per second. Unfortunately, it turns out that it is not enough. Every sports enthusiast knows it, as well as action movies with dynamic camera work.

TVs have been using various tricks for many years to reduce the shortcomings of such a low frame. They use tweening mechanisms and other techniques to ensure that the image does not blend or change in an abrupt and low fluid manner during motion. Unfortunately, no such mechanism guarantees 100% efficiency. Of course, the answer is to provide the TV with more frames per second. As part of the HFR format, they are sent to the television for one second, not 25, and up to 50. Thanks to this, the movement is smooth, devoid of artifacts and smudging.

Until now, to be able to test all these solutions working simultaneously, we were limited to ... video games. Now similar quality is also provided by nc + .

Even the most developed VoD service providers in Poland do not offer the whole range of described solutions in their content, although materials in 4K and HDR are becoming more and more common. Actually, the only visual art that is available in such high resolution, in so many colors and with such smoothness are video games from Xbox One X and PlayStation 4 Pro consoles.

Slowly, however, we are entering modernity. If we are compatible with some or all of the solutions described above, it is worth getting interested in the nc + offer . I have no doubt that in a while UHD will become a standard with all leading TV providers, it's natural. However, this is still a more or less distant future.
