Nokia 9 PureView: 5 lenses and five times for slow operation

Nokia 9 PureView is one of the stars of MWC 2019 , mainly due to the camera equipped with up to five lenses. The first contact with this smartphone unfortunately disappoints.

Getting to Nokia 9 PureView at MWC 2019 was not easy. The crowd at the stand was keenly interested in five lenses, but fortunately we managed to get the final model from the company's employees who carried out a long demonstration of the camera's capabilities, and then let the Nokia 9 PureView in practice be tested.

The smartphone has a very conservative shape, which I associate with smartphones from 2017. The shape is reminiscent of LG G6. The lack of notch is a positive element, but the front, in combination with a chrome strip running all the way around, stands out from what we know from the top devices of the competition.

In addition, the Noka 9 PureView has not the latest components. Its heart is the last year's Snapdragon 845 processor, which is not noticeably slower than this year's model, but it is made in the older, more energetic lithography 10 nm. For this we have on board 6 GB RAM and 128 GB of built-in memory.

The screen is a 5.99-inch P-OLED design with a resolution of 1440 x 2880 pixels. The panel is covered with Gorilla Glass 5. The screen is of good quality and supports HDR 10, and includes a fingerprint reader.

The smartphone works under the control of Android 9.0 Pie , and the software is released as part of the Android One program, so we are dealing with a clean, unmodified system that is to be constantly updated.

The system of five cameras is the biggest distinguishing feature of the Nokia 9 PureView. On the back wall there are seven eyelets in the revolver system, and two additional ones are the light-emitting diode and the TOF sensor used to detect depth.

When it comes to the system of cameras, we have five identical lenses with a standard angle of view (focal length 28 mm) and brightness f / 1.8. All cameras have a resolution of 12 megapixels, but three are monochrome and two are colored. So we see the development of the idea known from the former Huaweia smartphones, although the Chinese in the latest models are moving away from the black and white matrixes.

The Nokia 9 PureView Camera uses all five lenses simultaneously when taking pictures. The collected data is then combined into one photo, in which we can choose the focus plane. What's more, after taking a picture, we can change the blur level, having at our disposal a blur of the second plan and the front.

It all impresses at the technical level, but in practice gives average results. With more complex frames, we can easily find imperfections in blurring the background. The whole system works very similar to smartphones with a double lens.

The speed of the Nokia 9 PureView camera will most likely turn out to be the biggest problem in terms of use. Pictures taken with the camera were recorded after 8-10 seconds. During this time, you could not view them, let alone edit them. What's more, you had to wait a few more seconds for the preview of the file in full resolution.

In conversations with other journalists and bloggers, I've even heard about more than 40 seconds, but I did not get such an absurdly long time alone. This does not mean that Nokia 9 PureView has a fast camera. Using it resembles a return to the past, specifically to the memorable Nokia Lumia 1020 , which also had a camera made in PureView technology.

The Lumia 1020 took great pictures, especially in 2013, but the recording time did not allow for spontaneous shooting. At that time, it was possible to turn a blind eye to it, but today the situation on the mobile market has changed completely.

Several months ago, such a smartphone could have made an impression. Today, not necessarily.

The Nokia 9 PureView did not make me feel unimpressed on any level. The appearance smacks of the mouse, and the quality of performance stands out from the top smartphones from 2019. The components are good, but in today's realities are not exciting. On the other hand, the most important point of the construction, that is the camera, is disappointing with its slenderness and non-ideal effects.

If Nokia 9 PureView entered the market last year, it would have several strong rivals, but buying it would be worth considering. Today, in its current form, it is difficult for me to recommend a new Nokia to anyone. The latest banner smartphones are making phenomenal photos, and top devices from last year are beginning to cheaper. Many of them offer genius cameras with three lenses of different focal lengths, which in everyday use are more reasonable than the idea of ​​Nokia.

Remember that the above description is based on a dozen or so minutes spent with a smartphone in your hand. This is only the first impression, so it is quite possible that with a longer use the smartphone gains. At the moment the situation looks bad, but I hope that a long time of recording photos can be fixed by updating the software.
