Microsoft is working on a new system that is deliberately not called Windows. Microsoft Lite is coming

Imagine a super safe, reliable, light and efficient system. Flexible and ready for devices of the future. You should not have any problems with that, because Microsoft has been trying to convince us for half a decade. And it looks like he does not want to stop.

Do you remember Windows RT ? It was the first mass-produced desktop Microsoft system for the client, which was compatible only with ARM processors. By the way, due to the above: only with applications from the Windows Store. He suffered a huge defeat: on the day of the premiere, as well as many months later, the system did not receive any support from application developers from third parties.

The second approach was Windows 10 S. It is a system with an artificial limitation for the user, allowing only the installation of applications from the Microsoft Store. The company hoped that the much richer offer of this repository would make its idea more sensible. It did not, and the Windows 10 S itself transformed into an optional operating mode for regular Windows. Now he is working on approach number three.

What exactly is Microsoft Lite?

This is a very good question, considering that Microsoft officially does not communicate anything about this product. According to the scraps of information that have so far surfaced, this system is deliberately not called Windows. It will not be his successor or the podversion. It will be a completely new operating system, although it will have much in common with the said Windows.

There is a reason why Microsoft does not want to call this product Windows. Unlike Windows RT and Windows 10 S, this system will not have artificial locks to run applications outside of the Microsoft Store. He will not be able to do it technically. Microsoft Lite will only be able to run web applications (including PWA) and using the modern Universal Windows Platform (UWP), because it will not contain older solutions in its code. They will not be artificially hidden from the user, they simply will not be there.

Microsoft Lite would therefore be an operating system built on the foundations of Windows Core OS containing only the Chromium and Universal Windows Platform runtime environment. It would be completely devoid of Win32 code or even a familiar Windows interface. This, however, does not necessarily mean the absolute inability to run the majority of the Win32 application software available for Windows: in parallel, Microsoft is working on a remote virtualization service for this type of programs through the Azure cloud. Although it is not clear if it has any connection with the Lite system.

What is Microsoft's system for?

The original idea behind Windows RT and Windows 10 S was the right one. It was a problem with its implementation. Windows is a system with too many baggage experiences . It contains solutions that some people call mature - after all, they have been refined for decades - and others are rotten because they are so old that they are not ready for the needs of a modern user.

As a result, Windows can still compete with equally outdated forms as macOS - with mature platforms, with foundations refined for decades. However, there is not the slightest chance against iOS, Android and Chrome OS. At least not in usage scenarios that work particularly well in these systems. They are trivial in servicing and administration, they are also light, responsive and easy to modernize, adapted to the specifics of the work of low-voltage processors in portable devices.

Microsoft tried to adapt Windows to these new scenarios and he fell. Now he is trying for the last time, creating an operating system almost from scratch - to build it, however, using in part the set of solutions he has already refined.

Microsoft Lite is associated with other temporary names: Centaurus and Pegasus.

It's Microsoft's internal terms for the future equipment. The first describes folding computers with two displays, the second describes more classic notebooks. This perfectly sums up Lite's aspirations, which are the desire to compete with the Chrome OS and maybe even with iOS on iPads. For serious work invariably, Windows 10 will be offered in the foreseeable future.

The question related to the sensibility of the whole project remains open. Because yes, no doubt Windows 10 has too big and too heavy backward compatibility luggage to be able to face these more modern, mobile platforms.

On the other hand, it is still another Windows RT or Windows Phone. It can be lighter, faster, more energy-efficient and more convenient. The only thing that is changing now - apart from the lightness of the system, which will be a difficult advantage to promote - is the naming of the system (it is no longer Windows) and reducing the importance of native applications for PWA. I am not sure if this is enough.

Especially that Chrome OS - although still not elegant - is already dealing with Android applications and I have no idea what kind of advantage Microsoft would provide me with the Google offer. Maybe we'll find out about the Microsoft Build conference in the spring.
