Lightning is not going anywhere. This year s iPhones will not have a USB-C connector

Bad news for people who wanted to get rid of Lightning cables this year. It looks like this year's iPhones will still not have a USB-C connector. The box will show up in addition an outdated charger.

Apple has eliminated most of the ports on portable computers in favor of modern, double - sided USB-C . The same connector also went to desktops and tablets. However, the company only seemingly simplified the issue of connectors that it uses in its products.

Apple is sticking to the Lightning standard in iPhones.

There is a situation in which, after purchasing a MacBook and an iPhone, you can not connect both devices to each other with wires that have been put into boxes. To do this, you need to buy an additional USB-C / Lightning cable or an infamous dongle. In addition, Apple got rid of minijacks from iPhones and iPads, while the headphones are still on. A real galimatias.

The strawberry on the cake is the fact that in the set with the sold in 2019, the iPhone continues to get a meager 5W charger with a large USB port. This accessory has basically remained unchanged for a decade. Although Apple's smartphones from two generations support fast charging, it would be a good idea to buy a better charger and an additional cable on your own.

It does not promise that the situation will change.

According to the latest reports, iPhones from 2019 will continue to use the Lightning connector. Apparently, the company was affair with the idea of switching to USB-C in this year's phones, but finally decided to maintain the status quo .

To make matters worse, the new charger will not be in the box with iPhones for another year in a row. The producer is still to add one that has only 5 W of power. And all the time with the Lightning cable, which has a USB-A end on the charger side, not USB-C.

It's a pity, because iPads Pro (2018) gave hope to clean up this port clutter.

In the tablets from the iPad Pro family released in autumn last year, the USB-C port appeared for the first time in the history of this line of devices. The manufacturer thus abandoned the Lightning connector in the iOS product, which previously seemed unthinkable.

Many people hoped that in the future all Apple devices, including telephones, will connect with each other either wirelessly or only via USB-C ports. This is not going to happen - at least not in the coming months.

In addition, switching to a new standard in other product categories than phones did not go smoothly.

USB-C in the Pro iPads of 2018 does not support the Thunderbolt 3 standard, just like the laptops from the Cupertino company. It is not possible to connect it to the LG UltraFine 5K monitor recommended by Apple.

It's so much good that the tablet can be plugged directly into the MacBook using a USB-C / USB-C cable, but here the manufacturer flies the ball on the charger. This in the set with the new iPad Pro has 18 W power, and better and sold separately will charge the model from 2018 faster.

In addition, there was a big problem with wired headphones.

Computers have a minijack socket, tablets only USB-C, and phones only Lightning. Thus, each of the three categories of Apple equipment requires a different type of headphones - possibly a separate adapter for the phone and tablet.

Of course, a solution to the problem is the use of wireless headphones, but not everyone will be satisfied with this solution. Switching to USB-C in iPhones, although this problem would be partially solved ...
