The next-generation Xbox is designed to support beam tracking. It would be great, though I do not believe it

Xbox One new items December

According to two independent and unofficial sources, the future Microsoft console will be able to render the graphics using a very realistic and resource-intensive method. The new Xbox allegedly supports ray tracing.

A few days ago, the world went round with information about the PlayStation 5 and next-generation Xbox configurations. There was no reason to consider her credible, which is why we decided not to inform her. Now, however , a certain hmqq has taken the floor , which has previously provided information that is consistent with reality.

The Internet user, who used a pseudonym, confirmed the gossip circulating on the Net in a partial way, pointing to those parts of it, which - as he claims - are consistent with the actual situation in the case of the new Xbox. I felt that it still does not mean that the configuration of the future Microsoft console is already known. However, if someone confirms this information, it is worth looking at.

What will the successor of Xbox One succeed ?

Here is the alleged partial technical specification.

The next-generation console is to be fully compatible with games supported by the Xbox One family - including those from the Xbox 360 and the first. The equipment is to be equipped with a custom-made 16-thread eight core AMD Zen 2 CPU, which is to be accompanied by custom Navi GPUs with a capacity of over 12 TFLOPS. The entire computing unit is to supplement 16 GB GDDR6 RAM and terabyte NVMe SSD storage with a bandwidth higher than Giga per second.

What pays special attention is the fact that the new Xbox is supposed to support the image creation technique known as ray tracing. It is much more flexible and gives a much more realistic result of the image generation method. Unfortunately, it is also very demanding for the equipment. Currently, only very expensive GeForce RTX cards on the consumer market are able to do so, and they tire a lot. In the meantime, Xbox uses and will use AMD chips.

According to hmqq, the solution to this puzzle - how AMD and Microsoft were able to introduce ray tracing to equipment that is to be inexpensive - we have to meet at the GDC 2019 conference. This is to be held in the second half of March.

What exactly is involved with this ray tracking?

A graphic engine using ray tracing can determine the color of each pixel based on the path the light has to go to the observer, taking into account all interactions with various objects along the way. Thanks to ray tracing, you do not need to combine to display appropriate shading, indirect lighting or reflections. They are not achieved by additional graphic effects, but during the rendering of the scene itself.

Such an accurate scene simulation precludes the use of various tricks by programmers that are currently used. For example, removing objects from the stage as soon as they disappear from the player's view. These tricks, however, cause additional problems that developers have to deal with. For example: a shadow of the object being cast and visible in the player's field of view, which is not visible on the screen itself.

It's hard to believe these revelations

The game console is supposed to be an inexpensive device, sold at a price well below PLN 2 thousand. zł. Systems capable of efficiently tracking rays cost much more. And the console is also mass storage, optical drive or other elements. This may mean that Microsoft and AMD will use some program trick and the above-mentioned ray tracing will be just as true as the promised 4K resolution in the X and Pro versions of currently sold consoles.

With more interest I am waiting for GDC 2019. If Xbox (and probably PlayStation) popularize the creation of games with ray tracking, we are waiting for a whole new generation of games, at least visually. Those that are a bit harder to distinguish from reality, even more immersive. If it's true, I can not wait.
