Here are the new Philips TVs with Dolby Vision and HDR10 +

philips hdr10 + dolby vision

This is the second producer of televisions, which in its equipment will provide support for both HDR10 + and Dolby Vision formats. Philips, like Panasonic , meets consumers.

Philips has presented its new TV sets for the current year. Both traditional LCDs and those using OLED panels from LG Display. In a moment, we will discuss it a bit closer, but at the beginning it is worth pointing to the common denominator that connects them. They support both Dolby Vision and HDR10 + formats. Why is it so important?

The current standard for HDR video content (High Dynamic Range - high dynamic range of colors and colors) is HDR10. This means that any equipment that has HDR support listed in the specification supports HDR10. Similarly, the situation looks like with video content: HDR10 is the base format for all.

The standard has two "backwards-compatible" candidates for successors: these are Dolby Vision and HDR10 +. The first one is a bit more advanced , but in matters - at least for now - negligible. Both offer in practice the same improvement over HDR10: dynamic metadata, allowing greater control over the image during its production.

HDR10 + versus Dolby Vision

HDR10 + is a free, open and recommended by UHD Alliance solution. The producers of equipment and content must pay for the possibility of using Dolby Vision. And yet, this paid and closed solution has so far been more often chosen by producers and suppliers. So the war of standards is far from finished.

Its side effect is complicated licensing agreements. Until now, it was not possible to buy a TV that supports both Dolby Vision and HDR10 +. We need to place a lot of potential winners on the bookmaker's account.

Fortunately, the consequences of the wrong choice will not be exaggerated. If - hypothetically - we will buy a TV set with HDR10 +, and in the end most of the movies, games and series will be received in Dolby Vision, and so we will recreate them in the otherwise inferior HDR10 (without a plus). Although this is only a partial consolation.

First Panasonic, now Philips. What besides the support for Dolby Vision and HDR10 +?

Two new models of OLED TVs were presented. Both - OLED804 and OLED854 - offer a 4K resolution panel, three-way Ambilight wall backlight and are managed by Android TV Pie. Both can also decode sound in the Dolby Atmos format. TVs will be compatible not only with the Google Assistant , but also with Alexa. They should have a maximum brightness of 1000 nit and be equipped with a third generation P5 processor, by 20%. more efficient than the predecessor. The only differences between the two models will be in the housing.

When it comes to the LCD TV line, the one being promoted will be the one called The One (model 7304). This is to be the mid-range leader and also include the Dolby Atmos decoder and offer 4K resolution in all sizes: from 43 to 70 inches. It will also be controlled by the Android TV Pie system and be equipped with the Ambilight system. The more expensive 8804 will be equipped with the Bowers & Wilkins sound system.

The prices are unknown. However, it is a commercially important premiere.

The Philips brand remains unchanged on the market, just like Panasonic. They do not have such a strong position as Samsung or LG, but they are certainly an alternative contemplated by consumers. It is not clear why the devices supporting both standards were finally introduced to the market. Have the terms of the license agreements changed? We can only speculate.

It is important, however, that both producers decided to reduce the importance of the war for a new HDR standard. Holders of their TVs will not have to worry about who will win, because their equipment still supports both. And the pro-consumer approach does not have, at least at the moment, any market leader. I hope that consumers will pay attention to this.
