AMD grinds Nvidia s nose. Such modern graphic cards have not been there yet

Radeon VII

The RTV graphic card line from Nvidia has remained unrivaled so far. Meanwhile, AMD has just presented a graphic layout on the technological advancement so far unavailable to the competition.

What exactly is "technological process" expressed in nanometers in the context of an integrated circuit? In an acceptable simplification: the fewer these nanometers, the more transistors are located on a given surface. So more computing power with similar size, power and heat emission.

The technological process is obviously not the only feature that determines the quality of a given integrated circuit. They include a lot of factors such as architecture, design, timing and much more. It is clear, however, that a more accurate technological process largely determines the possibilities that can be squeezed out of a given piece of silicon.

We refresh our knowledge about technological processes for a very specific reason. AMD presented the first on the market consumer graphics systems made in a 7-nanometer process. Neither Nvidia nor Intel has reached such technical advancement yet.

What can a 7-nanometer Radeon VII do?

For now, instead of specific tests, we need to be assured by AMD. According to the manufacturer, the very transition to the mentioned 7-nanometer process will allow the Radeon VII family to be around 25 percent. more efficient than the corresponding AMD systems of the current generation.

As an example, AMD gave Devil May Cry 5, which in 4K resolution achieves fluidity "significantly above 60 fps" on Radeon VII, which - according to the manufacturer - is faster than RTX 2080 from Nvidia. The GPU consists of 60 calculation units containing a total of 3840 stream processors, clocked at 1.8 GHz. They are accompanied by 16 gigabytes of HBM2 memory with a bandwidth of 1 TB / s and a 4096-bit interface.

The first graphics cards with Radeon VII systems are expected to appear in stores already in February. AMD predicts that their prices on the US market will oscillate around $ 700. so they are supposed to be about $ 100. lower than those that have to be paid for the RTX 2080's 12-nanometer process. All that is left is to hope that they will actually be at least as efficient or even faster.
