How are waterproof and dustproof standards?
Perhaps you have encountered the same statement in the explanations of various gadgets: "IP56 standard". What is the meaning of this phrase?
In this article, we will try to introduce you to this standard.
IP is actually the first letter of Ingress Protection, meaning "Resistance to external particle penetration". This standard is a numerical method that measures the resistance of the device against water or dust. In front of IP, two numbers are written. This method, which is a universal standard, is used by most electronics manufacturers.
For example, in the description of most Xiaomi products, you see this statement. For example, in the case of the smart band mi band 2 and smartwatch Amazfit Xiaomi, these products have IP67 dustproof and dustproof standards. Mi TDS is a standard waterproof IPX6 Water Tester.
As mentioned above, the IPXX consists of two numerical segments that are in front of the letters I and P, indicating the level of protection the device has against the penetration of dust and water. The first number, which can be from zero to six, indicates the degree of penetration of solids, that is dust and soil, and the second number, which is a number between zero and eight, indicates the amount of protection against water and moisture.
As these numbers are larger, the device that has this standard is more resistant to water and dust. That is, if the device has a standard IP68, we can say it is completely resistant to dust and has a very good water resistance.
Further, you can see the degree of protection against penetration of solids and water in accordance with this standard:
First digit of IP code (solid state protection)
0 No special protection.
1 Protected against solids with a thickness of more than 50 mm.
2 Protected against solids with a thickness of more than 12.5 mm.
3 Protected against solids with a thickness of more than 2.5 mm.
4 Protected against solids with a thickness of more than 1 mm.
5 Protected against dust; Limited penetration (relative protection).
6 Protected against dust.
Second digit of IP code (water protection)
0 No special protection.
1 Protected against vertical drop of water droplets.
2 Protected against dropping of water droplets at 15 ° C.
3 Protected against water spray to a 60 degree angle.
4 Protected against water splash with any angle.
5 Protected against low pressure water spray for at least 3 minutes.
6 Protected against high pressure water spray for at least 3 minutes.
7 Protected against the effects of floating in water to a depth of 1 meter for 30 minutes.
8 Protected against the effects of floating in water with a depth of more than 1 meter. The exact conditions are specified by the manufacturer for each device.
Thus, if a device has an IP67 standard, dust should never be able to enter it, and this device should be able to keep water at least 30 minutes at a depth of one meter without any moisture inside it penetrating. So you can safely use the mi band 2 in your bathroom or your Amazfit smartwatch.
